Epimax ointments: protecting your eyes

Epimax Ointment and Epimax Paraffin-Free Ointment are moisturisers for dry skin, eczema and psoriasis.

The MHRA, the UK medicines regulator, has warned that these products can harm your eyes if they come into contact with them.

How to use them safely

  • Use on your body only. Do not apply to your face or around your eyes, or use them to wash your face.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after applying the ointment.
  • Avoid touching your eyes after use.
  • Ask a pharmacist or clinician about a suitable alternative if you need a moisturiser for your face.

If ointment gets into your eyes

Rinse well with water and seek medical advice promptly.

Symptoms may include sore, red, swollen or watery eyes, burning, a gritty feeling, sensitivity to light or blurred vision. Seek help promptly rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Would you like to discuss your treatment?

Contact your GP practice to book a medication review with a clinician if you have concerns or would like to discuss another treatment.
